Diljit Dosanjh’s upcoming film, Punjab ’95, has been eagerly awaited by fans and cinephiles alike. The movie delves into the life of Jaswant Singh Khalra, a human rights activist who uncovered grave injustices during Punjab’s tumultuous period in the 1990s. However, despite its compelling narrative and star-studded cast, the film’s release has faced significant hurdles.

Censorship Challenges

The Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) has raised concerns over the film’s content, citing its sensitive subject matter. Initially, the CBFC demanded 120 cuts and objected to the original title, “Ghallughara,” leading to its renaming as Punjab ’95. Even after agreeing to these changes, the film faced further scrutiny, with the CBFC expressing reservations about its suitability for release in the current climate.

International Release Postponed

In January 2025, hopes were high when it was announced that Punjab ’95 would release internationally on February 7 without any cuts. However, unforeseen circumstances led to another postponement. Diljit Dosanjh shared his disappointment on social media, stating, “We are very sorry, and it pains us to inform you that the movie Punjab ’95 will not release on 7th Feb due to circumstances beyond our control.”

Creative Integrity at Stake

Both Diljit Dosanjh and director Honey Trehan have emphasized their commitment to preserving the film’s integrity. They have expressed that they would rather delay the release than compromise on the content by making excessive cuts. This stance underscores the challenges filmmakers face when portraying sensitive historical events.

Awaiting a Resolution

As of now, the release date of Punjab ’95 remains uncertain. The film’s journey highlights the delicate balance between artistic expression and regulatory frameworks. Supporters of the film hope for a resolution that allows audiences to witness this important story in its intended form.

The anticipation surrounding Punjab ’95 serves as a testament to the power of cinema to shed light on pivotal moments in history. While the wait continues, the conversation about the film’s themes and the challenges it faces remains ever pertinent.
